Maui Camping – Kīpahulu District at Haleakalā National Park

Car camping in the Kīpahulu District of Haleakala National Park on the South side of Maui offers an amazing display of the islands beauty . The Kīpahulu District protects an intact ahupua’a, a traditional Native Hawaiian land division that protects all resources from sea to summit. The streams are home to endemic gobies and other fish species that evolved from ancient salt water ancestors. Visitors to the Kīpahulu District are treated to views of waterfalls, sweeping ocean vistas, and Hawaiian cultural experiences.

What to do at Kīpahulu

According to the National Park Service you should be prepared for hot, humid weather year round. The weather can change rapidy; bring sun and rain protection. Wear sturdy, close-toed shoes on all trails. All trails are unpaved. Pets are not permitted on any trails.

Pīpīwai Trail

Take a hike up this 4-mile (round trip) trail that winds through a freshwater stream and diverse forest areas with views of waterfalls and other natural features. This trail is moderately strenuous with an 800-foot elevation change each way.

Pīpīwai Trail Guided Ranger Hike

The guided Pīpīwai Trail hike will now be on a reservation basis offered on Sundays at 10:00 am. Hikes cannot be booked until 9:00 am, one week prior to the hike. To reserve, please call 808-248-7375.

Kūloa Point Trail

This 1/2-mile (round trip) trail leaves the Kīpahulu Visitor Center and continues past a Hawaiian cultural demonstration area to the Kūloa Point at the mouth of ‘Ohe’o Gulch. This trail is easy with an 80-foot elevation change each way.

Kahakai Trail

This 1/2-mile trail extends from Kūloa Point to the Kīpahulu Campground passing by archaeological sites and gorgeous ocean views.

Drive-Up Camping

This area offers one drive-up campground. Campers are advised that Kīpahulu is wet, remote, and far from most amenities. Come prepared: bring water, food, and a tent. There is a water-refilling station at the visitor center, and shared grills, picnic tables, and pit-toilets are provided. Permits are not required, but campers must pay the park entry fee. Camping is limited to 3 nights in any 30-day period.

Maui Car Camping – Camp Olowalu

Maui camping offers a lot of great options, Camp Olowalu is one of them. Located about 4 miles south of Lahaina, on the West side of Maui, is Olowalu. Here you will find calm waters and a reef that covers over 100 acres. The reef is home to an amazing assortment of underwater creatures. The Olowalu shoreline is about a half (1/2) mile in length and offers a shallow, wind protected play area, perfect for small children to get there feet wet. Beyond the shallows is Olowalu reef. Here you will find great snorkeling where visibility can reaching over a 100 feet. The fish and marine life at the reef are varied and abundant including the occasional honu (a.k.a. sea turtle).

Wow! What a place – [CampCar’s] Lulu was by far the best way for us to get around Maui. [CampCar] was accommodating in every way and I just can’t say enough. Would do it again and am already planning the next trip. I’ve owned Vanagons and thought I wanted to go that route but based on my past experiences and conversations with other folks at the campgrounds renting them I’m glad we did it this way. The Element is a great vehicle – I’m in the market for one right now. – May 18, 2017

Renting [CampCar’s] Element was the best decision I made on my trip to Maui! He was accommodating and super helpful showing me all the ins and outs of the popup part of the vehicle. The Element is comfortable, reliable and super clean. The extra battery for charging electronics was helpful. If you rent this vehicle be ready to make lots of friends…people were very interested in the set up and I even ended up having dinner with some other campers after we chatted about this cool ride!! Had a great time camping on Maui with LuLu ! Carl was great to deal with . He picked us up at the airport as soon as we had our bags , gave us a quick intro to the car and we were on our way Camping on the island is readily available and if you bring a fishing rod (there seem to be no fishing licenses required ) you can camp on almost any beach free) The Element is a great vehicle ! Good on gas , reliable , comfortable , and setting up the rooftop tent literally takes 30 seconds. I would highly recommend (and have) LuLu for camping on Maui . It comes with all the camping gear you need too ! We brought a solar shower (a black plastic bag with a shower nozzle) which came in very handy as some of the campsites don’t have showers. – April 30, 2017

Maui Camping – Hosmer Grove at Haleakalā National Park

Car camping at Hosmer Grove atop Haleakala National Park on the East side of Maui offers a unique experience. Haleakala is a massive “shield volcano” with a summit of 10,023 ft or 3,055 m. The peak of Haleakala (“House of the Sun”) is know as Pu’u Ula’ula. From the summit there are amazing 360 degree views of Maui and even the neighboring Big Island but it’s the spectacular sunrises and sunsets that Haleakala is famous for!

Many visitors will wake up at 2:oo am to make the long drive/tour up the volcano just to catch the sunrise. Others will arrive hours early to save a spot for the sunset show. However, only a few get to see both! This is just one of the many reasons to camp overnight at Hosmer Grove. You can arrive mid-day and hike the trails of Haleakala then return to the summit to watch the sunset. In the morning you can awake to the spectacular sunrise! Park pass can be purchased at the entrance, currently $30.00. The park pass is good for 3 days so you have plenty of time to see all the sights including a sunrise AND sunset!

If you are thinking of visiting Haleakala and camping at Hosmer Grove, consider renting a CampCar. With a rooftop popup tent, it makes setup simple and it also provides a warm and cozy place to sleep. Haleakala can get very cold at night!
